The NO.1 Problem Facing Most Copywriters Is
The NO.1 Issues faced by most copywriters is - copy CLIENTS.
How do you find a paying client? Then how do you find the next client after the first one has been serviced and so forth?
The New Copywriter Client Dilema
Recently, I spoke to a new copywriter.
He told me his day looks a little like this.
He works in his non-copywriting job all day. He then spends his evenings trawling the web - linkedIn, social media etc trying to find a copy client. He’s been doing this for YEARS!
I get at least one copywriter a week emailing me here.
The pitch is almost the same regardless of who the email comes from.
Last week's email from a random new copywriter to me went a little like this.
"Alan I love your company. I can guarantee you I will increase your leads by a minimum of 20-30%."
Then he sent me a second email. The second email read like this.
"Alan I have created a flow chart for Master and Man. It reveals my secrets for increasing your leads THIS WEEK by 20-30% and possibly more. Shall I send you the video?"
I mean - good for him to make the effort but there isn't a single word I believe in his email.
First, you cannot guarantee any lead response number to anyone. One of my young mentees once promised to increase a client’s results by 8% The client invested heavily into his campaign based on this. The result was a 0.2% result. The client then sued the copywriter for his marketing losses based on an impossible promise. It cost this young guy - HIS HOUSE.
So making a promise of any number is a NO.
Second, I could tell his email was generic to many businesses. He talked about my film company yet had clearly done zero research into how a lead would approach a film company.
Third, his email contained no sig file - that's a big no for me to get a big promise from a disposable Yahoo or Gmail address.
No phone number, no WhatsApp, no website and no social links.
I don't know who teaches that junk but it's a no. And no wonder he is probably running two jobs right now.
Finding Copy Clients Is A Precise Skill
Finding copy clients in the early days is a precise skill and unless you understand how that works it can be and will probably be very difficult.
For example, if you lack experience it is a big mistake to chase highly experienced businesses - unless you are a natural or have some similar experiences to the client.
Finding clients isn't actually that tough. Matching a client to your skillset is an art that needs to be mastered.
So if you are a copywriter struggling to nail down a client you need to review your approach and ask yourself why.
I threw myself into the world of copywriting to the point I even sold my three hair salons and their income. Honestly, I never looked back yet when I do look back there are very specific reasons for my success. And in 2024 where a diverse approach is needed there are strong reasons - non-accidental reasons - why I am still able to earn incredible money writing.
